Thomas Edison Battery Got Revamped

A car battery made by Thomas Edison before is being upgraded thanks to the help of the scientists of today.

Thomas Edison was not only an inventor of light bulbs but also a thinker of this kind of innovation though it has things to be done. This nickel-iron battery was a century old and is more than better how it was centuries ago.

Edison's battery is said to be recharged only for around 2 and half minutes and not what speculations says which will take several hours. Though the battery discharges in under 30 seconds.

The battery was redone to help power cars of today with its new electrodes developed by Stanford University which will allow the battery to be charged and discharged faster  than older versions of this device. The battery is coming from cheap metals which availability is good. The battery itself uses nickel and iron electrodes immersed in an alkaline medium. The good thing of Edison's battery as well is that if it crashes it does not explode.Since it may take too long for the battery to be charged and release its power rather slow, lead-acid batteries has been placed in conventional cars and by lithium-ion batteries in electric cars
and some other applications which may require constant re charging.

Hongjie Dai from Stanford University of The Institute of Energy heads the team and a chemist says that since carbon is being used often to enhance electrical conductivity in electrodes they decided to try it with Edison's battery.

Petrol and Diesel fueled engines was way more powerful than Nickel-iron bateries which was marketed
for cars in 1920's until it stop and was eventually drop.

As explained, “The result is an ultra-fast version of the nickel-iron battery that’s capable of charging and discharging in seconds.”

Hongjie Daifurther added,“Our battery probably won’t be able to power an electric car by itself, because the energy density is not ideal,” said researcher Hailiang Wang.

“But it could assist lithium-ion batteries (in cars) by giving them a real power boost for faster acceleration.” The battery could then be replenished from regenerative braking. The chemical mix used in the battery is water with potassium hydroxide, which is stable, cheap and safe".

Though the prototype do have some off issues which after lots of recharging 800 cycles to be exact
it no longer holds charging so well. This is what the Statnford team hopes to resolve.
